Would You Hire You?
EOFY might have your head buried in reconciliations and payroll filings, but let’s pause for a moment – and turn the spotlight on you. Not your clients. Not your Xero reports. Just you and your business.
This is your mid-year check-in for Bookkeepers – a half-time huddle to ask: Would you hire you?
It’s not a trick question. It’s a smart one. Because while you’re out there making everyone else’s books look beautiful, your own business might be coasting on autopilot. Now’s the time to reflect, reset, and (if needed) rebrand.
Let’s dive into this quirky but practical self-audit.
First impressions: What’s your “shopfront” saying?
When was the last time you Googled yourself? Checked your email signature? Looked at your Instagram bio or website through the eyes of a potential client?
- Is your branding consistent and clear?
- Do your services scream “Bookkeeper for hire” or “hobby side hustle”?
- Does it feel up to date – or a little 2019?
Tip: A good brand tells your story without you needing to explain it. If your logo, tagline or tone don’t reflect where you’re at now, maybe it’s time for a refresh.
The client experience: What’s it really like to work with you?
Picture this: you’re a brand-new client reaching out for help. How quickly do you reply? How easy is it to book a discovery call? Is onboarding smooth… or a bit clunky?
- Are you responding within 24–48 hours?
- Do clients know what to expect next?
- Are you communicating clearly, or defaulting to jargon?
It’s not just about being friendly – it’s about being professional and efficient. The most successful Bookkeepers create a seamless experience, from that first email to the final invoice.
Pricing reality check: Are you charging what you’re worth?
Mid-year is the perfect time to review your pricing structure. Have your skills grown but your rates stayed the same? Are you still charging hourly when value-based pricing could work better?
- Do your prices reflect your experience and the results you deliver?
- Are you regularly reviewing your fees?
- Have you had “the chat” with long-time clients whose rates are still at 2020 levels?
Tip: If your heart rate spikes just thinking about a pricing conversation, you’re not alone. But learning how to confidently talk about pricing is one of the best ways to future-proof your business.
Our Mastering Sales course covers exactly this – from discovery calls to setting (and sticking to) your prices.
Are your systems serving you – or slowing you down?
Take stock of your tech stack. Are your systems working together? Or are you duct-taping processes that should be streamlined?
- How do you track leads and follow-ups?
- Are you automating what can be automated?
- Is your proposal process clear and repeatable?
Think like a client. The fewer emails, bottlenecks, and repeat questions, the better.
Are you easy to refer?
Referrals are gold – but they only happen if people understand what you do, who you help, and how to refer others to you.
- Do you have a one-liner that’s easy to repeat?
- Do your LinkedIn and website make it easy to share?
- Have you asked your favourite clients for referrals lately?
This is a great time to tidy up your referral systems and even build in some gratitude — a simple thank you or reward for referrals can go a long way.
What’s your gut telling you?
Last but not least – how are you feeling?
- Do you still love working with your clients?
- Are you proud of the business you’re building?
- Do you feel stuck, or like you’re moving forward?
The numbers matter, yes – but so does your intuition. If something feels off, dig into it. If you’ve been meaning to shift your niche, raise your prices, or step into a bigger space – let this be your sign.
